China’s National Day Holiday Spending Signals Strong Service Demand for Foreign Founders

China’s tax authority data shows robust service consumption during the 2026 National Day holiday, with double-digit growth in travel, dining, entertainment, and home appliances—key indicators for foreign founders planning market entry or expansion in China.

China’s National Day Holiday Spending Signals Strong Service Demand for Foreign Founders

Foreign founders evaluating China’s consumer market should note the latest official data from the State Taxation Administration (STA), which analyzed value-added tax invoice data for the 2026 National Day holiday and released results on October 8. The findings reveal broad-based strength in service consumption, offering practical insights for business planning, product positioning, and market timing.

Service Consumption Grows at a Double-Digit Pace

During the holiday, nationwide service consumption was robust, with average daily sales revenue in related industries rising 19.5% year-on-year, according to the STA. This broad growth suggests sustained domestic demand for services—a signal that foreign founders in sectors such as hospitality, food and beverage, entertainment, and retail should consider when assessing market opportunities.

Travel and Accommodation: Diverse Demand

Travel consumption showed strong momentum. Sales revenue for travel tours and entertainment services increased 23.6% year-on-year. Within this segment, travel agency services grew 26.2%, while amusement park services surged 41.2%. This indicates that both organized travel and leisure attractions are attracting spending.

Accommodation demand also diversified. Budget chain hotels saw revenue growth of 6.3%, while homestay services rose 12.8%. For foreign founders in the hospitality sector, these figures highlight opportunities in affordable chain models and localized lodging experiences.

Dining Out: Family Gatherings and New Beverage Trends

Family gatherings and wedding banquets drove strong catering consumption. Catering service revenue grew 9% year-on-year. Notably, specialty food streets and night markets boosted snack service revenue by 15.5%, while fast-food services increased 30.6%, catering to consumers on the move. New-style tea drinks continued to expand rapidly, driving revenue for beverages and cold drinks up more than twofold. These trends suggest that foreign founders in food and beverage should pay attention to convenience formats and innovative beverage concepts.

Culture, Sports, and Entertainment: New Scenarios

The holiday period saw a rich supply of new formats and scenarios in culture, sports, and entertainment. Concerts, cultural performances, and folk activities in many locations drove cultural and artistic service revenue up 20.9% year-on-year. Within this, literary and artistic creation and performance services grew 21%, and mass cultural and sports activities rose 28.3%. Events such as the China Open tennis tournament converted event traffic into consumption, boosting sports service revenue by 29.4%. Foreign founders in event management, sports, and cultural services may find these growth areas worth exploring.

Home Appliances, Digital Products, and Kitchenware: Strong Sales

Sales of home appliances, digital electronics, and kitchen and bathroom products were particularly strong. Revenue from household appliances and audio-visual equipment increased 40.1% year-on-year. This was influenced by several factors: some funds for the consumer goods trade-in subsidy program were disbursed before the holiday, new digital products were launched in clusters, and pent-up demand for home upgrades was released during the long break.

Within this category, retail sales of daily-use appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines grew 40.6%, while retail sales of home audio-visual equipment such as televisions rose 36.6%. Communication equipment including mobile phones and smart bands saw revenue surge 119.8%. Retail sales of kitchenware and sanitary ware increased 52.3%. These figures indicate strong consumer appetite for upgraded and smart home products, relevant for foreign founders in consumer electronics, appliances, and home goods.

Implications for Foreign Founders

The STA data provides a snapshot of consumer behavior during a major holiday, which can inform market entry strategies. For foreign founders registering or operating a company in China, understanding these consumption patterns can help in choosing sectors, timing product launches, and tailoring offerings to local demand. Sectors showing double-digit growth—such as travel, entertainment, and digital products—may warrant closer examination. However, founders should also consider regional variations and competitive dynamics, and use such data as part of broader market research.

China’s vast consumer market continues to show resilience in services and upgraded goods. Foreign founders looking to establish a presence should ensure compliance with local regulations and consider partnering with local experts to navigate the business environment.
